Thousands Experiencing Power in Queensland and Victoria Following Intense Weather Systems

Around 25,000 households in Queensland's southeast were left lacking electricity on the start of the week after severe thunderstorms swept through the area, producing wind gusts topping 109km/h.

Large Hailstones and Broad Damage

Homeowners reported large ice chunks as large as 7cm in certain regions. Weather authorities confirmed that multiple regions across the state had been impacted by significant hail.

Utility workers were working to restore power throughout the affected regions, with nearly 70 crews activated to manage the widespread outages.

Victorian Climate Difficulties

At the same time, nearly one thousand energy customers in the southern state also experienced electricity disruptions after the metropolitan area recorded its heaviest rainfall in 18 months.

Rescue organizations handled 598 emergency reports across the region, primarily for building damage but also for collapsed vegetation and inundation.

Hardest Hit Locations

  • Werribee - experienced significant destruction
  • Hoppers Crossing - multiple emergency calls
  • Wyndham - 179 calls for assistance

At one point on Sunday, over 28,000 power users in Victoria were experiencing outages.

Meteorological Predictions

Humid circumstances were predicted to continue along large portions of Queensland's east this week as a weather pattern continued to pull in damp air against the coastal areas.

Tuesday was forecast to be the wettest day, with persistent thunderstorm potential expected across multiple regions of both regions.

Medical Alert

Health officials warned that there was an increased chance of weather-related respiratory issues across the state's northern country region, especially given the current weather patterns.

This warning comes after historical occurrences where similar conditions led to significant health impacts in the state.
